Introduction From The Operation Manual
Bovie® Smoke Shark II Smoke Evacuation Systems are intended to evacuate and filter surgical smoke plume and aerosols created by the interface surgical tools with tissue, examples being lasers, electrosurgery systems, and ultrasonic devices. Smoke Shark II Smoke Evacuation Systems are designed with a high suction, high flow rate vacuum motor that is specifically designed for use in smoke evacuation systems. Bovie® SF-35 Filters are designed to process surgical smoke from the surgical site through an ultra-quiet motor via vacuum tubing. There, the surgical smoke is processed by a series of filters before going into the Bovie® SF35 Filter. During filter changes, a single disposable filter is used to simplify the installation and removal of the filter. Filters are enclosed in plastic so that healthcare personnel are protected from the contamination that can occur during filter replacement. Bovie® SF35 Filters contain four different stages to catch the smoke plume inside a single filter. In a first-stage filtration system, there is a pre-filter whose function is to trap and remove gross particulates and casual fluids. The second stage filtration is ULPA grade (Ultra Low Penetration Air) filter whose high-tech patented (U.S. Patent #5874052) design captures particulates and micro-organisms from .1 to .2 microns at an efficiency of 99.999%. Third stage filtration is performed using the highest grade virgin activated carbon, specially designed for Bovie Medical Corporation to remove and adsorb odors and toxic gases produced during the burning process of tissues. In the event that healthcare professionals are subjected to prolonged exposure to these gases, they may become ill as a result. The activated carbon used in the Smoke Shark II Smoke Evacuation Systems preferentially eliminates toxic organic gases instead of water vapor, and as a result provides optimal odor elimination. An expanded foam is used in the fourth stage of filtration to trap fine activated carbon particles that presumably would have otherwise migrated outside the filter. The Smoke Shark II Smoke Evacuation System has electronic controls on the front panel that are designed to be user-friendly, simplifying the operation and setting up process of the system.
